Kassel possesses a great history, which begins in the times of princes and earls, who lived in Kassel and endowed it with unique buildings and nature parks, e.g. the mountain park Wilhelmshöhe with the Hercules figure as well as the palace Wilhelmshöhe. Today, Kassel stands for culture and internationality. Great cultural events take place in Kassel regularly, e.g. an exhibition of modern arts, the documenta, which is the largest and most important in the world. Kassel is also famous for the Brothers Grimm, who spent a lot of time here. A museum and even a whole part of town are dedicated to their history and fairy tales. A further renowned citizen of Kassel is the great composer and violinist Louis Spohr. He developed and implemented the modern orchestra culture as court conductor in the 19th century.

Conference tour and conference dinner (June, 17th):
There is going to be a bus transfer to the "Hercules" statue (Kassel’s landmark) on a mountain top. It is a guided tour through the "Mountain Park" (which is the largest of its kind in Europe), passing the "Cascades" and the "Lion Castle" (Löwenburg). The park has baroque, romantic and classicistic elements and includes numerous buildings. Finally we will have a guided tour trough the two main attractions of the "Palace Wilhelmshöhe" which will be the historic wing "Weissensteinflügel" and the "Gallery of Old Masters". Duration: approx. 3 hours.
After the conference tour the attendees will be transferred back to the 4 main hotels (Schweizer Hof, Best Western Kurfürst Wilhelm I, Inter City and Ramada hotel). There they will have the chance to change their casual clothing into evening attire. The attendees will be picked up again at the above mentioned hotels for the conference dinner. After dinner there will be a bus transfer back to the hotels.

Accompanying person’s sightseeing program (June, 16th):
It is going to be a bus tour (> 120km) into the fairyland, on the footsteps of Brothers Grimm and baroque monuments. The attendees are touring to "Palace Wilhelmsthal", the "Castle of the Sleeping Beauty", the fairytale forest "Urwald Reinhardswald" and the medieval town "Hannoversch Münden" (bus, entrance fees, lunch and tour guide included).

Transportation

The best way to get to Kassel is the train station Wilhelmshöhe (Bahnhof Wilhelmshöhe), which is directly connected to the local public transport. Please note that the so called main station Kassel (Hauptbahnhof) is not the usual station for longdistance trains. Your registration at the INSS 2010 includes a city ticket for local public transport (trams and buses) to the hotels and congress venue for the conference days. Trams to the congress venue and hotels depart every few minutes. Here you can download a schematic travel diagram for the public transportation between important INSS locations.
